Site Transformation:

The Black Prince Distillery

This photographic series documents the transformation of the historic Black Prince Distillery site in Clifton, New Jersey. Over years of photographing the property, I recorded the final days of a landmark that stood for generations before making way to a new chapter.

These photographs preserve moments that no longer exist, creating a visual record of change while exploring the relationship between history, memory, and redevelopment. I invite you to explore the collection and discover the stories behind these photographs and the changing landscape they preserve.

Chapter One

A Familiar Landmark

For years, the Black Prince Distillery was part of the Clifton skyline. Living directly across the street, I walked past it almost every day. When redevelopment began, I realized this familiar landmark would soon disappear. I decided to document the transformation—not just the demolition, but the entire journey from an industrial site to a new neighborhood.

Chapter Two

Transformation

As demolition progressed, the site changed almost daily. Buildings disappeared, massive tanks were removed, and landscapes that had remained unchanged for decades were suddenly gone. These photographs document that period of constant change.

Chapter Three

Renewal

Construction gradually gave way to landscaping, sidewalks, trees, and new homes. What was once an abandoned industrial property became a place where people now live. The final photographs document the completed transformation and the beginning of a new chapter for the site.

Epilogue

What Remains

Today, the Black Prince Distillery has given way to new homes, sidewalks, trees, and community spaces. Change is inevitable, but photographs preserve the moments that would otherwise disappear. This project is both a record of a place that once stood and a reminder that every landscape carries the memory of what came before.
